Photos Spark Question Over Cameron Diaz Becoming A Parent

Over the weekend Cameron Diaz and her husband Benji Madden shared the news they had become parents to a baby daughter named Raddix.

The celebrity pair, who are notoriously private, with Diaz making a deliberate choice to step out of the same public spotlight that saw her rise to fame, told the world they had become parents in a similar way.

Their message shared the news they were now a family of three, yet Diaz, 47, and Madden, 40, followed their announcement with their wish for privacy going forward.

"Happy New Year from the Maddens! We are so happy, blessed and grateful to begin this new decade by announcing the birth of our daughter, Raddix Madden," Diaz wrote on Instagram.

"She has instantly captured our hearts and overjoyed our family. While we are overjoyed to share the news, we also feel a strong instinct to protect our little one's privacy."

Diaz noted the new parents had made a decision not to post any pictures of Raddix on social media or offer any further details or updates about their daughter.

Following their announcement, PEOPLE reported that Diaz and Madden had welcomed Raddix “right before New Years in Los Angeles.”

“You can tell they are just the happiest,” the source told the publication. “It’s very emotional for them.”

Yet photos of Diaz from November which have been circulated by a number of websites online suggested she didn't appear visibly pregnant, leading to speculation that the actress may have welcomed Raddix via surrogate.

PEOPLE previously reported that Diaz and Madden had been wanting to start a family since they married in 2015.

“Cameron really wanted to be a mum,” a source told the publication. “Cameron and Benji were hoping they would be blessed with a baby.”

The surprise announcement of Raddix's arrival shocked fans as the pair had not made a pregnancy announcement and there had been no reports that the couple were expecting a child.

Keeping the pregnancy a secret further intensified the speculation in addition to none of the reports referring to Diaz as having been pregnant.

Doctors haven't been able to agree on whether or not Diaz not showing meant she was pregnant or not, with some stating it is possible to be slim while still carrying a baby.

However fertility expert Dr Gedis Grudzinskas, who observed the picture of Diaz said: “At seven months, she would have been showing."

“Women who are seven months pregnant typically put on 10 to 12 kilos and most of that weight is around the lower abdomen," Dr Grudzinskas told the Mail Online.

Diaz has also disabled comments on the announcement of Raddix's arrival which has stifled well wishes for and conversation about her daughter.

Yet some have tweeted questioning whether or not Diaz and Madden used a surrogate. “Wait but was Cameron Diaz pregnant or was it a surrogate?” questioned one.

It's A Girl! Cameron Diaz And Benji Madden Welcome Their First Child

The Los Angeles-based couple announced the baby's arrival on social media Friday local time, adding that they won't be "sharing any more details".

Diaz previously explained why she retreated from fame, adding at the time that she has no intention to return to acting.

“I started [experiencing fame] when I was 22, so 25 years ago — that’s a long time,” Diaz told InStyle.

“The way I look at it is that I’ve given more than half of my life to the public. I feel it’s OK for me to take time for myself now to reorganise and choose how I want to come [back] into the world. If I decide to. I don’t miss performing.”

'I’m Not Doing This Anymore': Why You Haven't Seen Cameron Diaz In Five Years

The actress has been absent from screens since 'Annie' in 2014 and now she's talked about her quiet retreat from public life.

Diaz said that the fact she no longer has to 'sell' her films means her time is all her own.

"I don’t have to give anybody anything. I’m not doing this anymore. I’m living my life," she said.

Diaz and her husband met at a dinner party in 2014 and have been married since 2015, with the former actress stating: “Getting married to him was the best thing that ever happened to me."

“My husband’s the best. He’s the greatest human being, and he’s my great partner," she said.

I don’t know if I was ready [when I got married], but I knew Benji was special. He’s just a good man. There’s no bullshit. It’s really refreshing. I’m really grateful for him.

Diaz officially retired from Hollywood in 2018 and said she waited until 41 to get married because she hadn't met the right person.

“I think it’s a matter of I just hadn’t met my husband, you know? I had boyfriends before. And there’s a really, really distinct difference between husbands and boyfriends,” Diaz told friend Gwyneth Paltrow at a live event.

“And I have a husband who is just my partner in life and in everything. Talk about two very different people! We are so different from one another, but we share the same values — we’re totally two peas in a pod. We are both just weird enough for each other.”
