Do You Wear A Hair Tie On Your Wrist? Then You Need To Read This

A US doctor has warned those of us who wear hair ties around our wrists to take special notice of the mark it leaves behind when we take it off.

It's something most of us are guilty of doing -- slapping our hair tie around our wrist just in case we might need it later.

Sometimes we do and sometimes we don't, meaning sometimes that hair tie can sit digging into your wrist for upwards of 12-18 hours a day (even more if you forget to take it off at night).

Then, when we eventually do pull it off, we're almost always left with a little indentation going around our wrists.

Spoiler alert: That dent might be a sign of something more sinister.

You see, according to Suzanne Steinbaum, who is the director of women’s cardiovascular prevention at Mount Sinai, that indentation might be an indicator that your circulation isn't up to scratch.

"Elastic is the most concerning when it comes to hair tie materials," Dr Steinbaum told Well + Good.

It can dig into the wrist and prevent blood flow.

Dr Steinbaum went on to say the tightness of the elastic band also plays a big part in the issue.

"If you have numbness or tingling in your hand, or it becomes cold and pale, your hair tie on your wrist is probably too tight," she said.

But here's where the problem arises, as the symptoms of having a too tight hair tie cross-over those associated with heart attacks.

According to The Heart Foundation, that feeling of "heaviness" and "uselessness" in your arms is a symptom associated with heart attacks.

The foundation states that sufferers may experience  "discomfort, pain, heaviness or uselessness in one or both arms.

"People who have had a heart attack describe feelings of discomfort, numbness or tingling in their arm(s). This discomfort may spread from your chest to your arm(s)."

That doesn't mean you have to give up the hair tie for good.

Dr Steinbaum said that there's an easy fix for us in that we just need to start choosing looser elastic bands or head back to the '90s and rock a scrunchie.

"If it's not too tight, then it is okay to wear it for extended periods. If it is too tight, however, it's important to not wear it for too long," she said.

Dr Steinbaum was also pretty clear not to wear them to bed and to make sure there's space between the band and your wrist when you do wear one.
