Stop Everything: Science Has Found A Way To Reverse Wrinkles
Yes you read that correctly. Form an orderly queue.
A groundbreaking new study by the University of Alabama has found a way to turn off the gene mutation that causes ageing, reversing wrinkled skin and hair loss in the process... and these findings may well mean that at some point soon we will be able to GET RID OF WRINKLES!
The study was actually done to track mitochondrial depletion. And in case you're not a science buff, here's the thing. In cells, 90 percent of the chemical energy cells use to survive is created by the mitochondria -- which are known as the powerhouses of the cell. They are organelles that act like a digestive system which takes in nutrients, breaks them down, and creates energy rich molecules for the cell.
When mitochondrial DNA is lost, scientists think it can cause diseases like cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and neurological disorders that stem from age.
And -- and now for the skincare bit -- as humans age and our mitochondrial function declines, it can also cause many "symptoms" of growing older, like wrinkles and hair loss. The researchers found during the study that when normal mitochondrial function is restored, there can be a reversal of all these symptoms. Hallelujah!
If you can't wait for that research to trickle down into the beauty sphere, then don't stress (also, frowning causes wrinkles too!) -- mitochondrial research isn't the only recent way that science has been saving our ageing skin. Researchers have also been looking at epigenetics and how that affects the signs of ageing -- again, for the non science buffs, the epigenome has been identified as the control panel for our genes, determining which of them is turned on or off at any given time. Altering the epigenetics of the skin may have an effect on how it ages and how it rejuvenates.
Skincare companies are already playing with that concept -- with new formulations addressing the genes involved with wrinkle formation and hyperpigmentation as well as elasticity in the skin.
What a time to be alive!
