Nicole Kidman Shares Heartbreaking Miscarriage Story

The superstar shares her grief in a new interview.

She told Marie Claire magazine in 2007 that she lost a baby during her marriage to Tom Cruise, but now Nicole Kidman has spoken of the grief and "enormous pain" associated with losing not one but two babies to her Hollywood heavyweight husband during their 10 year marriage.

In the July issue of Tatler Nicole has finally addressed the miscarriages and the devastation they caused her. And it makes for some heartbreakingly real reading.

She told the magazine that from the moment she married Cruise she wanted  to start making babies with him, even though she was in her 20s and just starting out in Hollywood.

The 22-year-old little-known actress met the American superstar during an audition for their 1990 film Days of Thunder and it was love at first sight --Kidman has said in previous interviews that she immediately felt the electricity when she shook his hand. They married that year, and by 23 she was pregnant, only to miscarry soon after.

“From the minute Tom and I were married, I wanted to have babies,” Kidman previously told Marie Claire eleven years ago. “And we lost a baby early on, so that was really very traumatic."

I know the yearning. That yearning. It's a huge, aching yearning. And the loss."

"The loss of a miscarriage is not talked about enough," she said to Tatler. "That's massive grief to certain women."

The couple’s first miscarriage happened just after her wedding to Cruise and was the result of an ectopic pregnancy.

The pair then decided to adopt, first their daughter Isabella, now 24, and then their son Connor, 22, Nicole telling Tatler that she never had  any qualms about adoption, especially given her mother had an adopted sister. “It’s been part of our family, and I knew it would probably play out somewhere in mine. I didn’t think it would happen so early but it did,” she said.

According to reports, Nicole then managed to get pregnant again but -- again -- suffered a devastating miscarriage, around the time Cruise stunned her and the rest of the world by filing for divorce in 2001.

Just heartbreaking.

After her divorce from Cruise, Nicole of course met and fell in love with  country star Keith Urban. They married in 2006 and  -- joyously -- have had two biological children, daughters Sunday Rose, 9, and Faith, 7, who was born via a surrogate.

“There’s an enormous amount of pain and an enormous amount of joy on the other side of it,” she told Tatler about becoming a mother after the heartbreak of miscarriage.

The flipside of going through so much yearning and pain to get there is the feeling of “Ahhhh!' when you have the child.”

Of course, her relationship with all of her children is a constant source of discussion, particularly given that she has often acknowledged the younger girls and not Isabella and Connor.

In her acceptance speeches at the Golden Globes in January 2017 and at the Emmys in September 2017, Kidman mentioned Sunday Rose and Faith, but not her two adopted children. She's since been interviewed by ABC News in the US, where she corrected the host who referred to her as only having two young daughters.

“Well, I have two adult children who are grown-up, one of them’s married, and then I have little girls,” Kidman told her proudly.

And who are we to judge her.  She may have won an Oscar, and a Golden Globe and an Emmy et al,  but for this woman who so desperately wanted to become a mother, having been blessed with her children must be the best award of all -- regardless of how she mentions them in speeches.
