Harry and William: Brothers, Best Friends And Best Men
They're a couple of royal besties ...
When Prince Harry stands at the altar on Saturday May 19, nervously waiting for bride-to-be Meghan Markle, there will be one person beside him who will hopefully make him feel a bit less terrified … best man and brother William.
It makes sense that on the most important day of his life, Harry, 33 would have his older brother by his side, just as Wills, 35, invited Harry to be HIS best man when he married Kate Middleton in 2011.
The boys, born just two years apart, really are two peas in a royal pod. Having lost their beloved mother Princess Diana in 1997 when they were just children, the pair have an incredibly close bond, and just like any other brothers, their relationship involves a fair amount of jokes and teasing -- though unlike any other brothers it also involves a lot of polo, having a gran who’s the Queen and living in a palace, but let’s not get picky here.
Let’s pause for a moment in this pre-wedding madness to look back at the unbreakable brotherly bond between two of our favourite royal men. Haz and Wills we salute you with our selection of your finest moments …
October 4, 1985 and a three-year-old William and a nine-month-old Harry are just hanging out at the piano in Kensington Palace.
Just a few weeks later and once again the pair are photographed in the palace, this time taking to their trusty horses for a bit of riding practice. The start of their lifelong love of polo?
In 1986 the two princes headed to Highgrove House decked out in a bit of camo -- something they'd both get used to in their military service.
Fast forward to 1989 and the royal duo attended their first official event together -- the Beating Retreat parade at Kensington Palace. Harry steadfastly ignoring the generally-accepted rule that redheads shouldn't wear red.
On September 11, 1989 the brothers stood on the steps of Wetherby school with their proud mum, Diana, for Harry's first day. Shorts! Caps! Blazers! Could they BE any cuter?
April 10, 1991 and the pair head off on holiday with mum -- skiing in Lech, Austria. Sick sunnies and coordinated snowsuits de rigeur.
As iconic a shot as they come, this photo of Princess Diana and her boys on the log ride at Thorpe Park amusement park in April 1993 is a true classic. So happy, so toothy ... so damp!
Just days before the death of their mother, this portrait of the boys with father Prince Charles was released to commemorate the summer holidays. The trio posed at Balmoral, the royal family's Scottish holiday home, where they were spending the season with The Queen.
Prince William and Prince Harry arrive to attend the Royal Wedding of Wills to Kate Middleton at Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011 in London, England. The marriage was attended by 1900 guests, including foreign Royal family members and heads of state -- Harry's wedding at Windsor Castle will be substantially smaller, but no less nerve-wracking for the groom.
As close to Kate as he is to William, Harry was third-wheeling it for years -- like at this event in 2011, the Sun Military Awards held just months after Wills and Kate tied the knot.
April 2016 and the princely pair were trying out light sabres during a tour of the Star Wars: The Last Jedi set at Pinewood studios. And star spotters take note -- they even appear as stormtroopers on the DVD version of the movie.
Along with William's wife Kate -- and now Harry's love Meghan -- the boys are heavily involved in charity work and have formed their own mental health initiative called Heads Together. In May 2017, Harry, William and Kate raced as part of training for the London Marathon in the city's Olympic Park.
Still firm polo fans the pair played in a charity match in Cirencester in the UK in July last year. It takes a confident man -- or men -- to wear those white pants with panache.
Now, after years of singledom, Harry has finally met his romantic match. And Meghan Markle has already joined "the firm" -- the former Suits star seen here in February 2018 at the Royal Foundation Forum in London with Prince William and Duchess Kate.
