Travelling can be a stressful experience at the best of times – especially when you consider the endless packing lists, unpredictable schedules, and cranky toddlers away from their routine. But it doesn’t have to be this way, if you’re prepared. Organisational expert from The Living Room, Peter Walsh says you can take the stress out of travelling by following these five simple tips.
Use zip-lock bagsResealable plastic bags are one of the best travelling essentials you can have in your luggage. “Zip locks are great for holding things like dirty clothing or anything that might be wet. And the clear containers are fantastic for decanting things like shampoo or other cosmetics so that you only carry small amounts,” Peter says.
Keep it transparentYou’ll speed through airport security if your toiletry bag is clear or see-through. “A clear toiletries bag is a great travel mate,” he advises. “It helps you to quickly and easily find the things that you want, and it really encourages you to keep your toiletries clean and sanitary.”
Add a compact bagA lightweight smaller satchel, such as a bumbag with a strap that can be worn across your body, is another necessity when travelling. “A compact bag that doubles as a day pack also folds up so it takes up minimum space in your luggage,” Peter says.
Add zippered pouchesThere’s nothing more frustrating that having to untangle your phone charger from other cords. “Use small, zippered pouches for things like adaptors or phone charges, or other items you might need on your flight. And use small coloured tags to identify what’s in each of those pouches,” he says.
Use lightweight luggageWhether you a frequent bag-checker or prefer carry-on luggage, Peter says lightweight and durable luggage is the way to go to minimise overweight fees and bag-stowing injuries. Each carrier has their own specific requirements, so always check with your airline before you depart.
