'Everyone Is Finding Out My Secret': Dami Im Is Taking The Plunge On 'Dancing With The Stars'
After a quick look at this year's 'Dancing With The Stars' cast, it would be easy to assume that Dami Im has a major advantage.
The singer first made her mark when she won 'The X Factor' in 2013 and followed it up with one of the most iconic performances in 'Eurovision'' history, belting out her electrifying ballad, "Sound of Silence" to millions of viewers.
But while we were captivated by her powerful voice, none of us realised that she's never really danced on stage before -- and we definitely forgot that she managed to dazzle us at 'Eurovision' while sitting down for half the performance.
"Everyone is finding out my secret because of this," Dami laughed as she told 10 daily that her fans are going to realise, "I never dance in any of my videos or I pretend to dance."
"I make it look like I’m doing stuff, but I’m not really moving much," she added.
When Dami made her big TV debut on 'The X Factor', the directors made sure she wasn't too out of her depth when it came to blocking stage movements.
"It was never proper choreo, I’d walk to the left, the dancers would come and dance around me and then I’d walk to the right and they’d come and dance around me," she said.
"Back then, that was still a big learning curve for me, just walking around on stage so I think this is the next level up," she said of signing up to 'Dancing With The Stars'.
It did take a bit of convincing before Dami agreed to face her dancefloor fears, with the singer taking some time to decide whether the experience was "right" for her.
"I’ve never danced before, I haven’t even danced at my wedding, I literally have no dance experience," she said. "But after thinking about it for a few days, I thought, this could be my last chance to do something like this."
Dami's been paired up with professional dancer Shae Mountain who has been providing some hilarious commentary during their rehearsals, christening Dami 'Queen Unco' for her (currently) uncoordinated steps.
"It’s so funny, it’s how our rehearsals go," she said. "It’s basically me trying to do stuff and Shae going, ‘Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, not really, oh almost, no'.
"We’ve been training every single day for the past two weeks and it’s hard work and I’m sore everywhere -- I think I’m meant to be improving but I can’t really tell at the moment," she added.
But while she's already sore all over and her feet are covered in blisters, Dami knows the 'Dancing With The Stars' experience is a chance for her to tell her story and lay bare her vulnerabilities.
"I think one of the reasons I decided to do ‘Dancing’ was so that I could be more open with people," she told 10 daily.
"A lot of people saw me through ‘X Factor’ and ‘Eurovision’ but I think I’ve grown so much over the last few years and I just want to tap into the opportunity to share more of myself with the audience," she said.
