Let's Relive The Most 'Out Of Control' Interview The Project Has Ever Seen
To whoever thought it was a good idea to put Russell Brand and Lara Worthington on the desk together: thank you.
It's 'The Project's 10th b'day this Friday, so we've been reminiscing about all the great moments the desk has delivered us over the past decade.
There have been plenty of agenda-setting, important conversations, and stacks of emotional moments, but today, we want to relive the hilarious and out-of-control time that some genius decided to sit Russell Brand and Lara Worthington next to one another.
What could go wrong, right?
The year was 2015. Russell was in Australia on his Trew World Order tour, and Lara was in the country to promote a line of self-tanning products. Naturally.
Within five minutes, Russell had proclaimed his commitment to the Lord, hit on both Fifi Box and Lara, discussed the arbitrary nature of semiotics and the philosophy of language, concluded that paparazzi are -- in fact -- people, and covered the desk in self-tanner.
It was a wild ride from start to finish, and it stuck out in both Waleed and Peter's minds as being one of the most memorable moments on the desk.
On having Russ and Lara on the desk together, Waleed recalled, "someone thought that would be a good idea, and maybe in an entertainment sense, it was, but it was just completely out of control".
"You couldn’t trust Russell to behave himself in that context," he told 10 daily.
"It was so out of control."
Pete echoed the sentiment, calling it one of his funniest on-air memories.
"You know, Russell Brand coming on, and then Lara Worthington joined us on the desk as well -- I think she was promoting a hand cream, and then Russell -- the hand cream was suddenly everywhere!" he exclaimed, laughing.
"That kind of reminded me of the 'Rove Live' days, and the craziness of 'The Tonight Show'," Pete reflected. "I love when our show can have that vibe about it."
So how do the panellists deal with chaotic energy on the desk? Waleed said that basically, you just have to roll with it.
"I think you just have to surrender to when you know you’re on the air, that you’re probably not meant to let happen but you can’t stop them so you may as well let it happen," he said.
We couldn't agree more, and honestly, you should rewatch the whole clip above, because it's very much worth your time.
