Ellen DeGeneres Reveals She Was Sexually Assaulted By Stepfather As A Teen

Ellen DeGeneres has appeared on David Letterman's Netflix talk show, where she opened up about being sexually assaulted.

Following Kanye West's candid talk about his late mother Donda West, in another upcoming episode of David Letterman's 'My Guest Needs No Introduction', the talk show host interviewed fellow talk show host, Ellen DeGeneres.

In the episode, which is set to air May 31, DeGeneres revealed that she was assaulted by her stepfather when she was in her early teens.

She began by saying that her mother, Betty DeGeneres, remarried "a very bad man" who hurt her.

"That's another thing that, you know, I'm angry at myself because....I was too weak to stand up—I was 15 or 16 and...I mean, it's a really horrible, horrible story and the only reason I'm actually gonna go into detail about it is because I want other girls to not, you know, ever let someone do that," DeGeneres told Letterman.

She went on to say that after her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy, her stepfather exploited the situation to sexually abuse her.

“He told me when she was out of town that he’d felt a lump in her breast and needed to feel my breasts because he didn’t want to upset her, but he needed to feel mine,” she said, saying he continued to assault her a number of times following the first incident.

Ellen added that she finally told her mother about the abuse years later, but when Betty confronted him,  he accused Ellen of lying.

"And then she...stayed with him," DeGeneres said. "So, that made me really angry."

"What most women do is, we just don't feel like we have a voice," she continued. "And that's the only reason that this is the first time I've ever talked about this to anyone other than my friends. We just don't feel like we're worthy, or we're scared to have a voice and we're scared to say 'no.'"

DeGeneres had previously discussed her experience in an interview with Allure in 2005 and in a 2018 Today Show interview.

The second season of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman premieres Friday, May 31, on Netflix.
