Bachelor In Paradise 2019: "I Barely Saw You!" The Emotional Confrontation Between Alex and Richie
Break ups are hard. They’re even harder when the whole nation is watching.
With both Alex Nation and Richie Strahan arriving in Paradise in the same episode, the ex-couple avoided one another at first, before quickly realising that they were both lacking any “closure” over the end of their relationship.
To give you a quick refresher: Richie was the nation’s Bachelor in 2016, and his romance with Alex Nation was hot and heavy from the get go. You’ll likely also recall that they once took a chocolate bath together, because who could forget?
Richie chose Alex at the end of his Bachelor journey, but unfortunately, their romance was short-lived in the real world, and the couple called it quits in 2017. In an interview with New Idea, Richie called the split “heartbreaking”, and mused: “I guess the brightest spark can fizzle fast.”
Since then, Alex and Richie hadn’t spoken at all, until meeting up in Paradise.
The chat that ensued was a heated debate about the circumstances that contributed to their relationship, and as anyone who’s had a messy breakup could predict, it was complicated and emotional.
While both Alex and Richie both made sure not to spill any “salacious details” as they cautiously spoke around a specific incident that Alex said was the tipping point of their relationship, the main point of contention seemed to be around communication and the physical distance between their lives in Melbourne and Perth.
In an interview, Alex said: “There was a time where I really needed Richie, we went through a really hard patch, and I went through one personally, and the man I needed the most couldn’t put a few little things aside to be there for me when I really needed him. There are still feelings there that I really need him to understand. I need to have some closure.”
During the confrontation, Richie argued that Alex kept “moving the goal posts every couple of days”, which made it “impossible” for him to keep the relationship going.
Speaking of the unnamed incident, Alex said that she had been “hurt” and “upset” that Richie wasn’t there for her. Richie argued that they had “talked about this on the phone, for hours in length” and that “[it was] completely out of [his] control” that he was unable to be there with her.
“I was working, Alex. I was on a mine site,” Richie argued.
“So you couldn’t get on a plane knowing where I had to be and what I had to do… to be there,” Alex replied.
Conceding that they did speak on the phone a lot, Alex explained that it was “more about presence”.
“Rich, I barely saw you,” Alex explained. “You say you jumped through hoops but I barely saw you. I needed to see you more. I had a child that I wanted you to see more… I needed more of your presence and I kept stressing that to you.”
Going around in circles, Rich then reiterated that he’d done “everything [he] could to be there” but that he’d “come to terms with it”.
For a brief moment, it seemed as though the conversation was coming to a close, as Alex said that she thought they “needed to have this conversation”. Richie agreed. “We haven’t spoken since…” he trailed off, before adding: “And you know exactly why and what happened, what I woke up to. I just can’t believe someone would do that to someone.”
This particular barb set Alex off, as she snapped: “Me?! Someone do something to you?! Do you… do you actually want to go there, Rich? Because I feel like people would have a very big opinion of a woman, being left alone to do something, that involved both of us --”
As Richie stressed that he “tried so hard to make [their] relationship work”, Alex scoffed.
“So you don’t think you left any room to grow, to try that little bit harder. You’re sitting there saying that you were perfect in our relationship? Because I know I wasn’t!” she replied.
“No one’s saying that, don’t put words in my mouth and try to say something that I’m not,” he replied, repeating that he had been trying to keep everything “happy” between them while they were together.
“Yeah because you knew you couldn’t salvage it,” Alex said, “because you knew that after what happened when I was left alone to go through something massive that no woman should go through --”
Richie went on to claim that Alex had made a decision regarding this incident because she “wanted to focus on [her] AFL career”, which Alex hotly disputed. “It was me?! I actually can’t believe that you are telling me that it was me,” Alex said, gasping.
“No no, we talked about it… Alex you’re a mother, you know that, clearly,” Richie said. “I spoke to you at length about that because you’ve gone down that path and you know what is involved in that. We spoke in length about that, and again, I supported you --”
Alex clapped back: “But you knew what it did to me, you knew what it did to me, you even said it yourself.”
After a few more back-and-forth jabs, the conversation began to wind down, with Alex telling Richie that she “[didn’t] want to fight with [him]”.
“Yeah I know, like you said, I’ve come to peace with it and I’m fine with it, and it’s okay, you know? I’m happy that you’re in a good spot, that you’ve -- you’d think you would’ve grown as a person,” Richie said.
“Yeah, significantly,” Alex agreed.
Richie went onto say that it was “all good”, while Alex said that she wanted him to “be comfortable” in Paradise with her.
“I don’t have any ill feelings towards you,” she said. “I don’t. I’ve put it to rest. I’ve moved on. It’s been over a year and I think that you’re a great person and I think that you deserve to be here and find someone, potentially.”
“I don’t want it to be either. I just want you to be happy and to do your own thing, so we’re all good,” Richie replied.
In a later interview, Alex shared that seeing Richie again kind of “[brought] up all the s**t” from their relationship, but went on to say that it was “good”.
“It’s good that he’s here, it’s good that I’m here, ‘coz this is actually an opportunity where we could clear the air,” she mused. “I feel like I have closure now. I can just put that to rest, let bygones be bygones and just move on from this.”
Richie echoed the sentiment.
“Seeing Alex, it’s a pretty wild and crazy situation, you know, at the end of the day, you’ve gotta move on, you obviously want the other person to be happy, and it’s all I ever wanted,” he said.
