'Neighbours' To Welcome First Ever Transgender Character To Ramsay Street

Georgie Stone is set to play the first ever transgender character on 'Neighbours', as she joins the cast this season.

The 19-year-old transgender advocate was named Hero Of The Year at the 2019 LGBTI Awards and was the 2018 Victorian Young Australian of the Year -- and she might soon be on her way to adding a Logie or two to her already impressive CV.

"I am so excited to be joining such an iconic show," said Stone, who took the initiative herself in pitching the idea of a trans character to the show's producers.

Stone saw the opportunity to bring some of her own experiences as a trans person to the small screen, and has been working with the Neighbours writing team on creating her character.

In the past year, Neighbours has featured a historic same-sex wedding (officiated by none other than Magda Szubanski) and broadcast an all-female International Women's Day episode.

"Neighbours is all about telling stories we can connect to, stories that reflect our society today," Stone said of what drew her to the program.

"It has progressed so much since it first began, which is why I thought it was time to have a trans character on the show. I can't wait for everyone to meet her!"

Stone celebrated the Ramsay Street same-sex wedding back in June 2018, writing on her Instagram that the episode was an important step for LGBTQ representation on Australian TV.

"It is so encouraging to see an iconic show like Neighbours telling an important story like this. Having Australia’s diversity represented on TV in such a spectacular way is so needed right now. YOU’RE MAKING HISTORY!" she wrote.

Stone will begin filming for her guest role in June, with her episodes scheduled to air on 10 Peach later this year.
