I'm A Celebrity 2019: Shane Crawford Fights Back Tears While Talking About His Dad
An emotional Shane fought back tears as he told Natasha Exelby about his relationship with his now-deceased father.
Laying next to each other in camp, Tash decided to ask Shane about his relationship with his dad, understanding that he was raised by his mum for most of his life.
Explaining that his parents separated when he was five, Shane admitted that his father wasn’t a big presence in his life growing up.
“But, to be honest, every time that we did do things with him I loved it. I had nothing but love for my dad but he just wasn’t in our life,” Shane said.
Shane’s father passed away when he was 43-years-old from cancer, Shane was 17 at the time.
“He was alive when I was drafted -- which was nice,” the AFL legend said, beginning to tear up as he recounted the decline of his father’s health.
“He was alive when I was drafted so he knew that I might have a career… He obviously never… he didn’t get to see me play,” Shane told Tash getting more and more emotional.
“However, he came to school when I was playing cricket in year 12 and he hung out for the day when he was really sick when he only had maybe a month to live. And we had a great day… and then he died.”
As his father's health continued to decline, Shane said his family urged him to see his dad one last time, but for Shane, it wasn’t an easy decision.
“I couldn’t,” Shane said, “I knew that he was like 38 kilos and I didn’t want that to be my lasting memory.”
This isn’t the first time Shane has spoken about his parents -- in a chat with Justin Lacko last week he spoke about the sacrifices his mum made raising her sons, saying that she was a massive influence on his career.
“I knew if we played well and we won… it would make her day, it would make her week.”
