I'm A Celebrity 2019: Comedian Tahir Bilgic Says Camping Is No Laughing Matter
Even though he admitted it was an easy decision to join the fifth season of ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here’, the comedian won’t be laughing when he spots his first creepy crawly.
Unashamed of his love for reality TV, Tahir Bilgic is under no illusion that his time in the jungle is going to be easy. Just because he’s watched -- as he says -- everything, doesn’t make what he’s about to go through any easier.
“Just because you’ve seen it, you’ve still got to do it,” Bilgic told 10 daily before heading into the jungle, thinking especially about the food trials that await him in camp the Fat Pizza star added, “You can’t smell it, that’s what people don’t realise.”
“People say, ‘Just hold your nose and drink it’, but if you’re not there to smell it -- not to mention flies buzzing around,” he said, “Do you not see that on camera? There are flies buzzing around!”
“Normally if I see flies buzzing around I get the hell out of there, I don’t shoo them away and think ‘Yes, I’ve got to consume this thing!” it doesn’t make it any easier.”
The food trials aren’t the only thing the funnyman is worried about. When asked if he was outdoorsy or had a lot of experience camping to prep him for his new jungle living arrangements he looked confused at the idea.
“I have zero and I mean zero camping experience,” Bilgic said. “I do not camp. Why? Because there are hotels. They invented hotels.”
Adding that he also has no cooking skills, saying: “My background is Turkish so I wasn’t even allowed in the kitchen, that’s my excuse” -- the writer and producer also said that even before he entered the camp he was stressed about what he was going to find there.
“I’m scared of almost everything,” Bilgic said, “creepy little things. Even staying in the hotel room [before the series began], I’m constantly surveying and checking.”
After discovering a few bugs and nasties (“Things I’ve never ever seen before. Wriggly things with antennas sticking out of nowhere!”) Bilgic said he was “delighted” by a mosquito net around the bed… something he’ll surely miss while in camp.
“First of all there’s a concern, why is there a net? Why does it have to be there?” he said, “but it did give me some sense of being in a cocoon so that was handy.”
So aside from the bugs, the sleeping outdoors, the cooking and the food trials Bilgic seemed to be prepped and ready for the jungle. So long as he can avoid doing any trials which involve heights.
“People say ‘Don’t look down.’ Of course I’m going to look down! I want to see where I’m going to fall!” he joked. “People give you all sorts of weird advice. They say, ‘If you’re really high up, just imagine you aren’t.’ How can I imagine that?!”
So aside from heights, bugs, sleeping outdoors, cooking and food trials -- Bilgic says he’s totally ready to face camp life. In fact, it might be harder than you think to get him out of there.
“I won’t be exiting, I’ll tell you that now,” he assured 10 daily, “There’s no way I’m leaving the camp until they kick me out.”
“Even when I win. I’ll just stay there. I’m the king of the jungle? I’m going to stay there!”
