Bella Heathcote Talks 'Strange Angel', 'Neighbours' And Dressember
Bella Heathcote got her acting break playing bad girl Amanda Fowler on 'Neighbours'. Now she's back in the 10 family on 'Strange Angel', a 10 All Access exclusive program where she plays a repressed housewife in the '30s.
Talking about her journey from Neighbours to films like Darkest Minds and The Neon Demon, Bella said that she still sometimes looks back on her time on Ramsay Street as a reference point for her characters now.
"I loved that role on Neighbours, I mean, as far as roles go, [Amanda Fowler] was pretty good and I’ve definitely referenced her," she told 10 daily over the phone. "Even when you say Neon Demon, I was talking to someone and being like ‘oh yeah, she’s got a bit of Amanda about her’. Playing the school bitch is pretty fun."
Currently, Bella is starring on Strange Angel, a mystery-drama about a man who invents rocket science and then joins a sex magic cult.
Did we mention that it's based on a true story? It's based on a true story!
Bella was just as surprised as us, initially.
"When I first read the script I was like, I don’t know, it's a bit outlandish, I was like ‘well, that would never happen’," she said. "I didn’t realise it was based on a true story, I didn’t know anything about Jack Parsons, but the more I found out about [the real story], the more curious I became."
It was that curiosity, combined with her character's arc, that won her over.
Telling us that she could relate to Susan's journey, Bella said that she felt like she "was growing up as Susan was growing up".
"From the first episode to the last, it’s such a huge leap, so that’s been fun to play," she said of Susan's character.
"She has an incredibly repressed, Catholic upbringing, she’s just so determined to be the good daughter, the good wife, she’s very well-behaved," Bella explained. "She’s so focused on being good and polite and being hard-working for her step-father -- and that’s a really complicated relationship -- and supportive of her husband to a fault."
Bella continued: "She has all these physical and spiritual ailments and as the season develops, I think she’s drawn to the very things she’s feared because she’s looking to break out."
Confirming that she'll be returning to the show for its second season, we chatted about what other roles she'd like to do in the future.
"I’d love to do comedy!" she exclaimed. "I typically get serious, dramatic roles, and I’m pretty goofy in real life and it would just be a different kind of challenge. But as long as I just keep doing different roles, I think I just aim unconsciously for variation and that has been pretty fun so far."
For the time being, though, Bella's looking forward to spending the holiday season at home with family and friends, "and hopefully some nice weather!"
She's also spending the month doing Dressember, which is kind of like Movember, but to raise money to end slavery and sex trafficking.
"My friend Penny and my stylist in LA, she’s on the board for Dressember and she’s the one who first told me about it," she said. "You wear a dress every day in December to raise money and awareness, and I’ve just watched Penny do it for a few years. The thing that I love about it is you can go on the website and you can see exactly where the money goes, and the foundations that they contribute to and how they use it, so it’s not just one of those things where you’re like ‘okay I’m just giving money away and I’m not sure where it’s going’.
Strange Angel is streaming now exclusively on 10 All Access.
