We Finally Found Out Who Died On 'Modern Family' And Fans Are Pissed
After 'Modern Family' co-creator Christopher Lloyd teased the death of a significant character this season, all was finally revealed in the latest Halloween -themed episode (Spoilers ahead!)
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in September, Lloyd revealed that the iconic fam will be “handling some bigger life events” in season 10, which premiered last month.
"We do deal with a death, which is certainly a topic that families have to deal with, and on television, it’s not easy to do because that’s a heavy subject. But at the same time, it would seem unusual for a family not to go through it,” he said at the time.
“(The death) will be a moving event -- and an event that has repercussions across several episodes,” he added.
Upon the tease, fans immediately began conspiring as to who would kick the bucket, with some suspecting that it could be patriarch Jay, or even his beloved dog Stella -- something that Sarah Hyland (who plays Hailey Dunphy) was terrified would happen.
Hyland previously told Variety that she would be fine with a death in the family as long as it wasn't Stella, the family's beloved French bulldog.
"If the dog dies, I leave,'" she said at the Women in Film and Variety's annual Emmy nominee party. "I'm that person that watches The Walking Dead, and I'm like 'feed the zombie the baby before the dog.' I'm a horrible person I know, but I just love animals so much."
Lucky for her, it wasn't either -- it was actually Jay's ex-wife and Claire and Mitchell's mother, DeDe.
With the reveal coming early in the episode -- when Claire gets a call from her stepfather with the sad news ahead of the family's Halloween celebrations -- many fans felt let down, given that Shelley Long who plays DeDe, was only ever in a handful of episodes.
But before we jump into the sea of disappointed fan tweets, can we take a moment to appreciate how spot on Cam's Halloween costume of Meghan Markle was in the episode??
Look, at least it wasn't the dog okay guys???
