Awkwafina To Be First Asian Woman To Host SNL In 18 Years
Rapper and actress Awkwafina is set to become the first Asian woman to host 'Saturday Night Live' in nearly two decades.
Awkwafina -- who is best known for her roles in hit films Crazy Rich Asians and Ocean’s 8 -- will host alongside musical guest Travis Scott on October 6.
The star wrote on Instagram that she was “supremely stoked” to score the gig.
The last time an Asian woman hosted the hallowed live comedy show was way back in 2000 when Lucy Liu took the stage -- the same year that she appeared in Charlie’s Angels.
“I just found out I’m the first Asian woman to ever host SNL,” Liu said of the historic moment during her opening monologue.
Awkwafina’s Crazy Rich Asians co-star Ronny Chieng tweeted his support for the upcoming episode.
Fans of Awkwafina's have also expressed their excitement for next week's episode.
One fan pointed out how important the release Crazy Rich Asians has been for Asian representation in Hollywood.
