Game of Thrones and Handmaid's Tale Lead 70th Emmy Nominations

Sandra Oh makes history, Anthony Bourdain gets recognised posthumously and Netflix dethrones HBO.

The nominations for the 70th Emmy Awards were announced this week and despite the usual suspects raking in noms left and right, the 2018 batch also include some happy surprises.

Sandra Oh has been nominated alongside Claire Foy, Keri Russell, Evan Rachel Wood and Tatiana Maslany for Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Oh is the first Asian actress to be nominated in the category -- she's been nominated for her role in the phenomenal series Killing Eve.

Adult Swim's Rick and Morty has also secured their first nomination after submitting the now iconic "Pickle Rick" episode which saw the alcoholic genius turn himself into a pickle, only to have to build himself a mech suit of rat parts to battle an army of sewer rats. You know -- typical Emmy bait.

In the technical categories, the late Anthony Bourdain's CNN series Parts Unknown was nominated for six awards including Outstanding Cinematography for a Nonfiction Program, Outstanding Sound Editing for a Nonfiction Program and Outstanding Writing for a Nonfiction Program.

Bourdain's Explore Parts Unknown was also nominated for Outstanding Short Form Nonfiction or Reality Series. The nominations come just a month after the 61-year-old died of suicide while in France filming an episode of the series.

HBO's Game of Thrones unsurprisingly lead the nominations, picking up 22, with Westworld right behind with 21, and The Handmaid's Tale grabbing 20.

While two of HBO's biggest shows raked in the highest amount of nominations it was streaming rival Netflix who bumped the network from the top nominated spot -- a record HBO has held for 17 years. This year Netflix picked up a whopping 112 nominations across their shows.
