Giddy Up! Lil Nas X's 'Old Town Road' Is Now the Longest Running No. 1 Song In Billboard History
He's finally done it -- artist and internet sensation Lil Nas X has officially made history after breaking the record for the longest-running number-one hit in Billboard history since the chart began in 1958.
The viral hit has spent a whopping 17 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100, breaking the previous record held by Mariah Carey's collaboration with Boyz II Men, “One Sweet Day” and “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, featuring Justin Bieber.
Billboard broke the news to Twitter today, writing, "It's official, @LilNasX's "Old Town Road," featuring @billyraycyrus, has now spent more weeks at No. 1 on the #Hot100 than any other song in history, with 17 weeks. It breaks the record previously held by "One Sweet Day" & "Despacito."
Lil Nas X seemed pretty excited over the news, simply tweeting, "YEEE TF HAWWW," in light of the news.
Even former record-holder Mariah Carey graciously congratulated the 20-year-old on the epic achievement, writing on Twitter alongside a photoshopped image of her "passing the torch":
"Sending love & congrats to @LilNasX on breaking one of the longest-running records in music history! We've been blessed to hold this record with a song that means a great deal to @BoyzIIMen and myself and has touched so many. Keep living your best life!" she wrote.
He later penned a lengthy message over Instagram, revealing that just last year he had been a struggling artist forced to sleep on the floor of his sister's house as he tried to make ends meet.
He described finding a "country-trap sounding masterpiece", which would eventually become the beat to "Old Town Road".
"Did I know it would become the longest-running number 1 song of all time? NO!!! But I am so thankful that this blessing has been placed upon me," he wrote.
"This song has changed my life and the way I see the world around me in less than a year. Thank you to every single person who has been a part of this journey. As I said before, it's just the beginning!" he added.
In honour of the impressive achievement, Twitter allowed the muso to "take over" Jack Dorsey's role as CEO of Twitter for one day, captioning the hilarious video "Old Town Road (CEO REMIX)".
In his first act as the boss of Twitter, he fired @Jack, before demanding an edit button (a great idea, tbh), and then firing a bunch of engineers when they didn’t type fast enough.
“Old Town Road” first reached the top of the charts back in April, shortly after Lil Nas X shared a remix of the track featuring none other than Billy Ray Cyrus.
After the catchy tune gained huge traction across the net, "Old Town Road” has since received additional remixes from Diplo, Young Thug, Mason Ramsey, RM of BTS, and has even been covered by Blondie throughout their recent tour.
