Eminem's Estranged Father Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr. Dead At 67
Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr -- known as Bruce -- reportedly suffered a heart attack while at home.
The father of rapper Eminem, Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr -- known as Bruce -- has died from a reported heart attack at his home near Fort Wayne, Indiana, according to family members and neighbours who spoke to TMZ.
Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Bruce Mathers III, had a notorious disdain towards his biological father, with several of his songs over the years detailing their lack of relationship after Bruce left Eminem and his mother, Debbie Nelson.
In the 2002 single "Cleanin' Out My Closet", the MC raps, "I was a baby, maybe I was just a couple of months/ my (expletive) father must've had his panties up in a bunch/ ‘cause he split, I wonder if he even kissed me goodbye/ no, I don't, on second thought, I just (expletive) wished he would die."
According to Debbie's 2008 memoir, My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem, she married Bruce when she was just 15 years old and he was 22. They welcomed Marshall Bruce Mathers III two years after tying the knot.
In the book, she revealed that following the rapper's birth the marriage quickly became abusive and Bruce left soon after.
“He never knew his father, and I did all I could to make up for it,” Nelson wrote. “I wanted Marshall to have a relationship with his father… but Bruce didn’t want to know.”
Following Eminem's rise to superstardom, Bruce reportedly began trying to contact his estranged son, telling The Mirror in 2001 that he had attempted to get in touch with the star numerous times, to no avail.
“His mum and I split up, and she went her way and I went mine. Debbie and Marshall kept moving, so it was impossible to find him. I tried for years to reach him through his mum’s family, but couldn’t get through,” he told the publication.
He went on to allege that he was "delighted" when he found out Debbie was expecting their child, and it was she who kept him from having a relationship with his son.
According to Em, however, there was never any effort from his father's end to establish a relationship, with the rapper telling the same publication, “My father? I never knew him. I’ve never even seen a picture of him,” he said.
"I heard my dad is trying to get in contact with me, but not now. I never got one letter. I never got anything from him and I think he could have at least tried to write. He could have done something – made an effort."
Eminem has yet to comment on his father's passing.
