K-Pop For Dummies: The Three Artists Everyone Is Talking About

It's no secret that K-Pop is here to stay, and it's getting more and more mainstream by the day. But with many groups out there to discover, it can feel particularly overwhelming.

To help you with your K-Pop awakening, we've narrowed it down to the three acts to be your gateway to a whole new world of music, because wouldn't want that?!

They're the acts you've likely heard of, or seen mentioned online, and they're a great entry point for diving head first into a world of giant groups and tons of drama (but we'll save that for another day).

BTS

Who are they? BTS --  also known as the Bangtan Boys -- are basically one of the biggest groups in the world right now. In July 2017, they decided that BTS stood for Beyond the Scene, despite being a group since 2013.

They've been named some of the most influential people on the internet by TIME, the biggest boy band on the planet by Jimmy Fallon and "easily the biggest and most successful name in K-pop in the world," by Forbes. They also made history as the first South Korean band to win the Billboard award for Top Duo/Group this year.

Currently in America, BTS just paid homage to The Beatles while appearing on 'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert'.

Performing their latest single "Boy With Luv" as a recreation of The Beatles 1964 appearance on 'The Ed Sullivan Show', the performance that first introduced the The Beatles to its American fanbase.

How many members are there? Seven

Names?  Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V and Jungkook

What songs should I listen to?

Well, "Boy With Luv" is everywhere right now, so that's a good place to start! After that, check out "Fake Love" and "Blood, Sweat and Tears".

BLACKPINK

Who are they? Blackpink are basically the female version of BTS, but with fewer members. They're all about hot choreo, pounding beats and an absolute f**kload of sass. They're still pretty new after debuting in 2016, but they played Coachella earlier this year, so they're basically crushing it.

In fact, they're the highest-charting female K-Pop act on the Billboard Hot 100, and have snatched up a bunch of YouTube records, like "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du", which was the most-viewed Korean music video in 24 hours on YouTube, and became the most viewed music video by a K-pop group on YouTube in January.

How many members are there? Four

Names? Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa

What song should I listen to?

Honestly, you should just watch their whole Coachella set, but if you're looking for music videos to kick off your BLACKPINK journey, "Kill This Love", "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" and "Boombayah".

LOONA

Who are they? LOONA are the absolutely massive girl group who are not-so-quietly taking over Twitter at the moment. In certain corners of Twitter, you can pretty much look at any tweet -- no matter how serious in topic or nature -- and there will likely be a LOONA stan who replies simply, "stan Loona". It's the cure for what ails ya!

Some examples:

How many members are there? TWELVE, but they also perform as three sub-acts, Loona 1/3, Loona Odd Eye Circle and Loona yyxy

Names? HeeJin, HyunJin, HaSeul, YeoJin, ViVi, Kim Lip, JinSoul, Choerry, Yves, Chuu, Go Won and Olivia Hye.

What song should I listen to? Start with "Hi High", the psychotically-upbeat bop that was LOONA's first single with all 12 members. For more beats and choreography, try "favOriTe" and "Butterfly".

Where to from here?

There's tons of other artists you need to check out. There's Twice, Everglow, IZ*ONE and plenty, plenty more! Have fun!
