Britney Spears - ... Baby, One More Time
We're noted Britney Spears fans over at 10 Daily, so this was the most logical place to start. Stealing pigtails as an iconic moment in personal branding right out from under Baby Spice, Britney hit the scene in 1998 with "... Baby, One More Time" and sent millions of tweens (this author included) running to Lincraft to DIY their own fluffy hairties. Legendary. Impactful. A true cultural MOMENT.
TLC - Unpretty
We love a song with a message, but a song with a message that also comes with a series of excellent hairstyles? What's better than that? Nothing, tbqh.
Lady Gaga - Telephone ft. Beyoncé
There are so many chic hair moments in this video -- in all of Gaga's videos, really -- but the coke bottle curls are really THAT B***H, you know? She did that.
Madonna - Hung Up
Madge has had about 16 thousand iconic hairstyles over the course of her career, and any one of them could have been mentioned here, but let's take a moment to recall when she singlehandedly brought back the '70s during her Confessions era. Underrated!
Christina Aguilera - Dirrty
No noughties fashion lewk was complete without hair that was at LEAST two different colours, and we have Xtina to thank for that, with her dirrty, two-toned locks from the Stripped era. Now, where did we put our Juicy Couture tracksuit?
Alanis Morissette - Thank U
Thank u, indeed! That's all!
FKA Twigs - Pendulum
Turning hair into art, FKA makes her hair a feature of this video as she gets bound and hung from the ceiling by her long locks.
Solange - Don't Touch My Hair ft. Sampha
'Nuff said tbh. She did that.
Willow Smith - Whip My Hair
We still don't have this song out of our heads from when we first listened to it in 2010, tbh. Only 10-years-old at the time, Willow burst onto the scene and whipped paint all over everything, rocking a series of very cool hairdos with a pile of tween attitude to boot.
Let's move onto the boys, yeah?
The Weeknd - Can't Feel My Face
Does anyone have cooler hair than The Weeknd? No. Let's move on.
Backstreet Boys - I Want It That Way
Nick Carter's floppy blonde undercut was THE hairstyle of the late '90s, and that's that on that.
Linkin Park - One Step Closer
Peroxide spikes and fire engine red hair are just the beginning of very cool cuts in this video, to be honest, but they're both definitive '00s looks that said: "I'm edgy, misunderstood and connected to the internet" in the best kind of way.
*NSYNC - It's Gonna Be Me
Justin Timberlake's ramen hair. You know it, you love it, here it is.
Eminem - My Name Is
From the moment Em stepped onto the scene, his bleached, shaved became synonymous with the Slim Shady brand, so much so that it prompted "The Real Slim Shady". The "My Name Is" video has more wigs, though, so we selected that one for our roundup of iconic hairstyles today.
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
Kurt Cobain's grungy aesthetic is still being copied to this very day, but his dirty blonde mop of hair prompted guys everywhere to let their hair grow long in the name of rock.
Justin Bieber - Baby ft. Ludacris
The video that launched a million crushes, the Biebs won the hearts of tweens everywhere with his swooped hair swagger.
And finally, an honourable mention:
Guy Sebastian - Angels Brought Me Here
Go the 'fro, bye!
