Advertisement Defends Checking His Phone During AFL Grand Final

Black Eyed Peas singer will.iam has assured fans that he wasn’t phunking with their hearts at yesterday’s AFL Grand Final performance.

As the group belted out their hit “Let’s Get It Started”, it appeared that the singer took a moment to check his text messages mid-song.

However, has explained that he reached for his phone for a very good reason -- to broadcast the performance to BEP fans and show off Australia to the world.

"Sharing on socials isn't checking phone mid song," wrote on Twitter.

"That's me being a performer & camera man showing the world how awesome Australia is," he continued.

"I wanted the world to see Australia from my point of view... and that POV is awesome & lovely... sorry if I offended anyone by sharing my love." has had a busy day on Twitter following the group's performance, with a number of Aussie fans complaining to him about the absence of former BEP member,  Fergie.

The singer explained the fluid nature of the group -- which was formed eight years before Fergie joined them as a vocalist on tracks including "My Humps", "Shut Up", and "Hey Mama".

Fergie last performed with the group at Coachella in 2015 and confirmed that the vocalist had left the group last year.
