Legends Only! John Legend Just Joined The EGOT Club
The musician just became the first African American man to win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award.
John Legend has just become an official member of the EGOT club after winning an Emmy for his performance in Jesus Christ Superstar.
Achieving EGOT status means acquiring the golden sweep of an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award -- and not many people have done it.
Icons Sir Tim Rice and Sir Andrew Lloyd Weber also completed their EGOT with the historic Jesus Christ Superstar win for an Outstanding Variety Special Live.
Legend wrote on Instagram that, "Before tonight, only 12 people had won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony in competitive categories.
"Sirs Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice and I joined that group when we won an Emmy for our production of their legendary show Jesus Christ Superstar.
"So happy to be part of this team. So honoured they trusted me to play Jesus Christ. So amazed to be in such rarefied air. #EGOT"
The trio have become the latest entertainers to receive all four major entertainment awards – joining actors and musicians including Mel Brooks, Whoopi Goldberg and Audrey Hepburn.
John will pop his new trophy alongside his Oscar statuette for the track "Glory" from the Selma soundtrack, his 10(!) Grammy awards, and his Tony for the play revival of Jitney last year.
The singer's wife Chrissy Teigen has known for a while that Legend wasn’t far away from achieving EGOT status, joking a few months ago that she might have to move her Spike TV award.
She commented on the way to the Creative Arts Emmys ceremony that she was close to sporting an "ugly cry face" if her husband won.
Teigen has also stated that age 39, Legend is the youngest person to EGOT. Technically, songwriter Robert Lopez was also 39 when he joined the EGOT club, winning Best Song for "Let It Go" from Frozen, and made history earlier this year when he became the first person to achieve a DOUBLE EGOT, but Legend has also made history today as the first African-American man to EGOT.
