Russell Crowe Stars In Gothic Western Based On Ned Kelly's Life

'True History Of The Kelly Gang' will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 11.

Crowe stars as Harry Power, a notorious bushranger with links to infamous 19th-century Australian outlaw Ned Kelly and the Kelly Gang.

The movie, directed by Justin Kurzel (Snowtown, Assassin's Creed), is a fictionalised re-telling of Kelly's escapades based on Pete Carey's Booker Prize-winning novel.

It was shot in small-town Clunes, Victoria, where the 2003 film Ned Kelly -- which starred the late Heath Ledger as the title character -- was also filmed.

True History Of The Kelly Gang is a Western-style film with dark undertones charting the rise and fall of Kelly, played by British actor George MacKay.

"Peter Carey’s book True History of the Kelly Gang always felt like the true spirit of Ned Kelly. Unsentimental, brutal, raw and visceral," Kurzel said in a press interview.

"His story is one of the great odysseys in history, and I feel excited to be bringing it to the screen with a fresh cinematic eye."

Harry Power was born in Ireland and sentenced to transportation for seven years in Australia for stealing when he was 21. Later in life Power took Kelly, a wild teenager from a rebellious Irish family, under his lawbreaker wing.

Kelly's gang of family and associates became outlaws in the then-British colony of Victoria, involved in activities from robbing banks and holding people hostage to exchanging gunfire with police.

The gang engaged in a final gun battle with police in 1880, which saw Kelly captured as the only survivor. He was tried, convicted and sentenced to death by hanging.

In the century after his death, Kelly became a cultural icon and inspired numerous works in the arts. The Story Of The Kelly Gang, a 1906 film, is regarded the world's first full-length narrative feature.

True History Of The Kelly Gang is yet to be given an Australian release date. The film also stars Essie Davis, Nicholas Hoult, and Charlie Hunnam.
