People Are Already Thirsty For The Actor Set To Play Elvis In Baz Luhrmann’s Biopic
Baz Luhrmann has finally cast his King to play Elvis Presley in his upcoming biopic, and it's 27-year-old rising star, Austin Butler.
Despite reportedly facing off against huge names like Ansel Elgort, Harry Styles and Miles Teller for the coveted role, the actor, whose credits include 'The Dead Don’t Die', 'The Carrie Diaries' and Quentin Tarantino’s 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood', was announced as the director’s pick by Deadline on Monday.
Luhrmann explained his choice for the late rock'n'roll legend in a statement, saying, “I knew I couldn’t make this film if the casting wasn’t absolutely right, and we searched thoroughly for an actor with the ability to evoke the singular natural movement and vocal qualities of this peerless star, but also the inner vulnerability of the artist."
“Throughout the casting process, it was an honour for me to encounter such a vast array of talent,” he added.
It seems that social media users are generally happy with the pick to play Presley, with fans of the star excited to see Butler get his "big break", while others pointed out the uncanny resemblance the pair share.
Along with longtime fans of the star, Butler's girlfriend -- 'High School Musical' star Vanessa Hudgens --- was also over the moon following the exciting news, with the actor posting a congratulatory message to her boyfriend over Instagram.
"AMMMM OVERRRR THE F*CKING MOOOOOOOOONNNNN. I CANT WAIT. SO PROUD OF MY HONEYYYYY!!!" the star captioned her post.
The flick is set to follow the late singer's rise to stardom and his close relationship with his manager, Col. Tom Parker, who will be played by Tom Hanks. Filming will reportedly begin early next year in Queensland.
