R&B Star Cast As Live-Action Ariel For 'The Little Mermaid'

Halle Bailey of R&B duo Chloe x Halle will officially join the Disney fam as the world's most famous mermaid.

The casting for Disney's live-action adaptation of 'The Little Mermaid' is well underway, with up-and-coming singer and actress Bailey cast as the film's titular character.

“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” the film’s director, Rob Marshall said in a statement.

Posting to her Twitter to share the exciting news, Bailey said it was a "dream come true" to play the underwater princess.

Fans of the star also shared their joy over the news, including 'Spiderman: Homecoming' star Zendaya, who retweeted the news, adding, “Here for thiiiissss!!”. Meanwhile, other users across social media praised the film for casting Bailey, who will be the first black live-action Disney princess in 22 years.

Halle currently stars on the series 'Grown-ish', and first rose to fame after she and sister Chloe covered Beyonce’s “Pretty Hurts,” which quickly caught the pop icon's attention and she signed them to her label in 2015.

The 19-year-old is the latest star to join the film alongside Awkwafina and Jacob Tremblay, who are in talks to star as Scuttle and Flounder, respectively, while Melissa McCarthy is reportedly slated to play evil sea witch, Ursula.

Production for 'The Little Mermaid' is anticipated to begin in early 2020.
