Rami Malek Nearly Appeared In 'Rocketman' As Freddie Mecury

The director of 'Rocketman' has revealed that Rami Malek's Freddie Mercury nearly made an appearance in the Elton John biopic.

Dexter Fletcher told Gay Star News that his daring cameo plan wouldn't have been completely ridiculous because John did share a manager with Queen in the mid-'70s, John Reid.

“There was an idea I had one point, where Elton’s in a restaurant with his mother. I thought John Reid and Freddie could be at another table and they wave at each other!” he said.

Not the most adventurous crossover in screen history, seeing as Freddie and Elton existed in the same timeline, city and industry but seeing Rami Malek again as Mercury just casually waving would have definitely been... jarring.

Fletcher promised that the scene "would have been amazing [but] it didn’t come to pass". Plus there's probably no way Rami Malek would reprise the role that scored him an Academy Award in someone else's feature film for a cheeky wave.

There would have also been a little problem in deciding how Reid would actually fit into the scene, seeing as the famous manager was played by Aiden Gillen in 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and then by Richard Madden in 'Rocketman'.

Fletcher ultimately decided against asking Malek because the nod to 'Bohemian Rhapsody' would have been "too knowing".

"I’m not looking to set out to make a cinematic universe!" he added.
