Elton John And Taron Egerton Perform Surprise Duet At 'Rocketman' Cannes Premiere
Elton John was joined by Taron Egerton for an emotional performance at the Cannes Film Festival.
Viewers at the premiere of Elton John musical biopic 'Rocketman' were in for a pleasant surprise on Thursday night, when the "Tiny Dancer" singer himself and Taron Egerton -- who played John in the film -- performed an emotional duet at the film's afterparty.
John told the crowd, "This has been a very emotional night for me ... Even if the movie doesn’t make one penny at the box office, which will kill Jim Gianopulos, it is the movie I wanted to make."
And emotional it has certainly been -- following the premiere of the film at Cannes, the film received a four-minute standing ovation during which Egerton was moved to tears. Performances of "Your Song" and "I'm Still Standing" during the film also earned rapturous applause from the audience.
Director Dexter Fletcher thanked viewers at the premiere, saying, “We’re absolutely blown away by your fantastic reception.”
Egerton, who plays John in the film, recently spoke to THR about the time he was shooting a singing scene for the film when the larger-than-life music icon arrived on set, saying, "There's really nothing more intimidating than performing in front of Elton."
"I don't think I could have done it if he was around a lot. But I think he knew that. He's very astute in that way."
'Rocketman' is out in Australian cinemas May 30th.
