James Bond Will Never Be A Woman, Says Producer

It looks like British spy 007 will never be played by a woman -- with the film’s producer ruling out a female lead in the iconic series.

“Bond is male,” Barbara Broccoli told The Guardian.

“He’s a male character. He was written as a male and I think he’ll probably stay as a male,” she said.

It means the legendary franchise will not be following the lead of films and TV shows including Ghostbusters, Ocean’s 8, and Doctor Who -- which have all rebooted with female leads.

However, Broccoli said it’s “fine” that Bond remain male -- saying filmmakers should be creating more unique female roles.

“We don’t have to turn male characters into women,” she said.

“Let’s just create more female characters and make the story fit those female characters.”

Broccoli is the daughter of Albert R Broccoli – who produced a number of classic Bond films including The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker, and For Your Eyes Only.

Speculation has been rife about who will play the next James Bond -- with Daniel Craig playing the iconic role since 2005.

Idris Elba was a hot favourite to replace Craig but officially announced in August that he wouldn't be taking on the role.

"Don't believe the hype," the Luther star wrote on Twitter.
