First Look At Joaquin Phoenix As The Joker Is Wildly Underwhelming

He looks like the kind of man who would take you back to his place on a first date to show you his collection of sexually explicit anime figurines.

In case you weren't aware, Joaquin Phoenix is set to star in an upcoming film about Batman's favourite foe, the Joker.

The film has been co-written and directed by Todd Phillips, the man behind The Hangover trilogy. Rather than being a Joker vs Batman kind of flick, though, it's set to be a dark and gritty origin story.

From what we already know, the film is set in the '80s, and will follow Phoenix in the titular role, as he's driven into a life of crime. Phillips described the film as an "exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study but also a broader cautionary tale".

Phillips shared a look at Phoenix as "Arthur" on Instagram and... well...

Why this early Joker looks like he is a member of several Flat Earther Facebook groups is beyond us.

Anyway, keep in mind this is an ORIGIN story, so Phillips' version of the character will undergo a radical transformation from the man we see now, Arthur, to the Clown Prince of Crime we know, love and fear.

Some set pics were also leaked featuring Arthur interacting with... you guessed it, a CLOWN!

The film also currently stars Robert De Niro, Frances Conroy, Marc Maron and Zazie Beetz. There was also confirmation that Alec Baldwin had joined the cast to play Thomas Wayne -- the father of Bruce Wayne -- but just days after the announcement, Baldwin pulled out of the project.

Warner has also made it clear that this version of the Joker stand outside the pre-existing DC Extended Universe, meaning Jared Leto's Hot Topic Joker is still canon in that world. Warner is reportedly still working on a standalone film all about Leto's iteration of the character which, eeshh.
