Colin Firth Confirms Split With Wife Livia After 22 Years
Colin Firth has announced he has separated from his wife Livia Giuggioli after 22 years of marriage.
The longtime couple's publicists said in a joint statement: “They maintain a close friendship and remain united in their love for their children".
During their temporary separation a number of years ago, Giuggioli, 48, admitted to a brief romantic dalliance with journalist Marco Brancaccia, 55, who later told media their affair "lasted just under a year".
“We met at a party at Colin and Livia’s house in Italy. I had known her for years and one thing led to another," Brancaccia said.
“She’d tell Colin she was on business trips and we’d meet all over the world. We met in New York, Brazil, Iceland, Italy and even London, where they live. I’d say we were very much in love."
Though Giuggioli admitted to the affair, the couple called Brancaccia a "stalker" and went as far as reporting him to police.
They accused the journalist of stalking Giuggioli and sending her menacing messages, plus writing an email to Firth alluding to revenge porn.
A friend of the Oscar-winning actor was reported as saying: "This email basically told Colin everything [Brancaccia] had been doing with his wife for a year".
“He described intimate meetings that would devastate any husband. He did so with the misguided and hopeless belief he could destabilise the efforts being made by Colin and Livia to sort things out."
A spokesperson for the couple said at the time: “A few years ago Colin and Livia privately made the decision to separate.
"During that time Livia briefly became involved with former friend Mr Brancaccia. The Firths have since reunited. Subsequently, Mr Brancaccia carried out a frightening campaign of harassment over several months."
The London-based couple were together for over 20 years and share two teenage children: Matteo, 16, and Luca, 18.
