Internet Famous Cat Lil Bub Dies At 8
Lil Bub, whose birth defects earned her a legion of devoted fans, has passed away "unexpectedly" in her sleep at the age of eight.
According to Bub's owner, Mike Bridavsky, the wide-eyed feline passed away "peacefully in her sleep" on Sunday, with Bridavsky calling her "the purest, kindest and most magical living force on our planet."
"BUB was cheerful and full of love laying in our bed with us Saturday night, but unexpectedly passed away peacefully in her sleep," Bridavsky said in a statement.
“I have always been fully transparent about BUB’s health, and it was no secret that she was battling a persistent and aggressive bone infection,” he continued, adding, "Even knowing this, we weren’t expecting her to pass so soon or so abruptly without warning. I truly believe that she willingly made the decision to leave her failing body so that our family would not have to make that difficult decision ourselves.”
Since the news broke, tributes from all over the world have been posted in memory of Bub -- including one by hip-hop heavyweight Missy Elliot, who wrote on Twitter, "RIP LilBUB you touched many hearts & my Poncho will be waiting for you at the rainbow bridge please let him know I miss him also."
Bub was born with feline dwarfism and other genetic mutations that kept her kitten-sized for her entire life, with huge eyes, extra toes and a protruding tongue, which earned her appearances on TV and at conventions.
She also starred in a Vice documentary, and raised over $700,000 for animals in need, according to Bridavsky’s statement. She released a book, hosted a talk show and released an album titled 'Science & Magic: A Soundtrack To The Universe'.
The sad news comes following the passing of another internet-famous cat earlier this year -- Grumpy Cat, who passed away in March following complications from a urinary tract infection.
RIP Lil Bub!
