Stevie Wonder Reveals He Needs Kidney Transplant
While finishing his set at British Summer Time Hyde Park festival, Stevie Wonder revealed he will undergo a kidney transplant later this year.
Wonder explained that he planned to do three more shows before going on a hiatus ahead of the procedure currently scheduled for September.
Telling the crowd he was "all good", Wonder also said he already has a donor lined up.
"So what’s gonna happen is this: I’m going to have surgery. I’m going to have a kidney transplant in September of this year," he announced. "You ain't got to hear no rumours about nothing; I told you what’s up -- I’m good.
"I want you to know, I came here to give you my love and thank you for your love," Wonder told the crowd. "I love you and God bless you."
The news of Wonder's procedure comes just days after the Detroit Free Press reported sources close to the iconic musician claimed he was "battling a serious but manageable health issue".
"He knows what he has to do to get himself together, and he’s doing it," a longtime friend of Wonder, Joan Belgrave was quoted as saying.
"He’s got a team around him — that’s what he needs. He’s got people around him who love him.
"He’s in great spirits. You would never know anything is going on. That’s how he wants it, and that’s how he wants to keep it. He’s making music and doing what he does, and that’s what he wants to focus on."
