Italian Scammers Posing As George Clooney Finally Arrested In Thailand
An Italian couple has been arrested in Thailand after years of impersonating George Clooney online.
The law finally caught up with Francesco Galdelli, 58 and Vanja Goffi, 45, who have been on the run "for years", according to AFP, earning the title of 'the Italian Bonnie and Clyde'.
The couple chose the 'Ocean's Eleven' star as the face for their elaborate scam -- selling clothing online and claiming that it was George's own fashion house.
Clooney has been wise to Galdelli and Goffi's tricks since 2010, giving evidence at a court in Milan in an attempt to halt their multi-million dollar scam.
But it's taken until now -- with the co-operation of Italian and Thai authorities -- to arrest the couple outside their home in Pattaya.
"During interrogation, Francesco confessed to claiming to be George Clooney and opening a clothes business to trick people into sending money," a statement from Thailand's Crime Suppression Division said, per AFP.
The couple is reportedly wanted for additional crimes they've committed in Italy, including selling fake Rolex watches online.
And to rub SALT into the wound of their victims, they'd apparently send packets of actual salt in place of the luxury timepieces.
Which is something to be admired in the scamming community, although Clooney is probably relieved that his identity is no longer being used to hock cheap suits.
