Naomi Watts Gags Kids In Mother's Day Instagram Post, Divides Fans With Joke

Naomi Watts' Mother's Day social media post has split fans -- leaving some laughing and others unfollowing.

Like many mums, the Twin Peaks actress took to Instagram on Sunday (local time) to share an image of her kids -- sons Sasha, 11 and Samuel, 10.

But the image had a slight twist, showing the young boys with duct tape across their mouths.

Watts captioned the picture: "Mother's Day gift to myself... #seenandnotheard."

The gag (pun not intended) had some followers in stitches, with many fellow mums commenting that they understood where Watts' head was at when she made the joke.

"Hahahaaa @naomiwatts what a wonderful day," one follower commented.

"Love the dark humour. Happy Mother's day," said another.

Meanwhile, others were left feeling uncomfortable, with comments suggesting it was reminiscent of child abuse and might even be insensitive to parents with non-verbal children.

"Unfortunately I can’t get it ... with all bad things happening around with kids it is totally not funny, even if it makes mother happy on her Mother’s Day ... screams will be much better here," one comment read.

Watts later uploaded another picture with her children, laughing together while on safari in Kenya.

"I'm so grateful to have these two wonderfully spirited people in my life," she said in the caption.

"They are brilliant and unique, they keep me laughing and growing every day. Bless beyond words to be on this journey together."

Watts -- who was born in England but began her acting career in Australia -- lives in New York with her children, who she had with fellow actor Liev Schreiber.

The couple continue to co-parent their children after splitting in 2016.
