Jerry Seinfeld Has Weighed In On The Kevin Hart Oscars Debate
Jerry Seinfeld has given us his two cents on the controversy surrounding comedian Kevin Hart.
Hart stepped down from his role as next year's Oscars host after being urged to apologise for homophobic tweets he'd written a few years ago.
The Academy is yet to announce a replacement host -- but rumours suggest the ceremony might go ahead with no one MCing the big event.
Seinfeld told Sunday Today that the Academy Board is in much more of a pickle scrambling for a new host than Hart is after losing the gig.
"Kevin is in a position, because he's a brilliant comedian, to kind of decide what he wants to do," Seinfeld told Willie Geist.
"He doesn't have to step down, but he can. And when you look at that situation, well who got screwed in that deal?"
The Seinfeld creator went on to explain that comedians have been "navigating these slalom gates forever" -- modifying controversial standup routines to score prestigious prime time TV gigs.
"Look, when I started out, there were dirty comedians — well, if you want to get on The Tonight Show, you can't use any of those words. And a lot of us went, 'OK. I still want to play. I'll play.' Here's a new rule, we're cutting this out. 'OK, I'll get around that.' So, that's our thing. It's like Lindsey Vonn: Wherever you put the gates, I'm going to make them."
"I think Kevin's going to be fine, you know," Seinfeld said in the TV interview. "But finding another Kevin Hart, that's not so easy. He's a brilliant guy with a movie career."
Critics have pointed out that this week's controversy isn't actually about playing by the censorship rules of television, the popularity of Hart or whether the Academy is having a hard time finding a new host.
Previous Oscars host Seth McFarlane has pointed out that pretty much no one even wants to host the damn show because it's a thankless job.
"I’m trying to think of the last time that I read a review of the Oscars the next day where everyone is raving about it -- it’s been a long time," McFarlane told EW.
