Sarah Hyland Gets Dragged For Asking Fans to Donate To GoFundMe
After her 14-year-old cousin was tragically killed by a drunk driver, Sarah Hyland turned to fans to help raise money for his funeral.
Trevor Canaday was killed in an alleged drink-driving accident over the weekend when a car hit her uncle's vehicle, leaving Trevor dead and his father, Bryan, seriously injured and requiring further surgery.
Posting to her 1.55 million Twitter followers, the Modern Family star begged followers to donate to a GoFundMe page that had been set up Trevor’s sister Tessa for Trevor's funeral expenses and Bryan's hospital bills.
“Bryan is recovering physically, but sadly Trevor has gained his wings and is singing and playing some crazy football in heaven," states the GoFundMe page.
It continues: "Trevor was a funny, smart, innovative, athletic, goofy kid and he was so loved. His memory will live on in many ways. Please help us do this for the family now to help ease their suffering away from money to focus on healing emotionally.”
At the time of writing, $US31,747 had been raised for the cause -- going over the initial goal of $US25,000.
While fans of the 28-year-old were devastated for the family, many questioned why the actress was urging fans to donate -- when she reportedly pockets a hefty $US100,000 ($AUD136,000) per episode as Haley Dunphy on Modern Family.
Hyland later hit back at trolls, writing, “You don’t know all the details. And how dare you attack when a beautiful life has been lost.”
Many fans soon backed the starlet, sending their condolences to the starlet and her grieving family, with friends of her late cousin also getting in touch with Sarah over social media.
