Amy Schumer Wants Maroon 5 To Protest The Super Bowl

After the news that Rihanna had turned down one of the year's biggest shows, Amy Schumer is urging Maroon 5 to reconsider their role in the Super Bowl.

Rihanna had been the NFL's first choice to perform at the Super Bowl LIII halftime show, but the singer declined, with sources saying she wanted to stand in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick.

With a gap in their schedule, the NFL looked to Maroon 5 to perform on the night who, according to Us Weekly, accepted "gleefully".

Now comedian Amy Schumer is asking the "Moves Like Jagger" band to re-think their participation in the Super Bowl and to also pull out in protest.

In an Instagram post, Schumer wrote: "I think it would be cool if @maroon5 backed out of Super Bowl like @badgalriri did."

The idea came from her thinking that more white people should support the black NFL players who were punished for their peaceful protest of police brutality during the national anthem before games. Kaepernick was the first player to initially sit during the anthem before ultimately taking a knee.

"Once you witness the truly deep inequality and endless racism people of colour face in our country, not to mention the police brutality and murders," Schumer wrote, "Why not kneel next to your brothers? Otherwise, how are you not complicit?"

The Trainwreck star also said that she had refused to participate in any Super Bowl commercials this year out of protest.

"I know it must sound like a privilege ass sacrifice but it’s all I got," she wrote. "Hitting the NFL with the advertisers is the only way to really hurt them."

Schumer later added in another Instagram post that she used to believe "because I saw us all as equal that was enough. It's not."

"Real equality and diversity makes everything better. Instead of focusing on if you think I'm annoying or if anyone cares about not seeing me in a commercial, how about YOU do something and use your privilege for good."

"Not trying to be a hero," Schumer wrote, "Just trying to be helpful to a situation we should all be obsessed with changing."

Schumer was recently part of a series of arrests while protesting Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court nomination alongside Emily Ratajkowski.

Maroon 5 have yet to respond to Schumer's suggestion.
