'We Protect Our Kids': David Beckham On Life In The Tabloids
The fashion icon sits down with Lisa Wilkinson to talk family, the pressures of fame and his most regrettable fashion faux pas.
After a two decade career playing for some of the biggest football clubs in the world, David Beckham has settled into retired life.
But it's not all smooth sailing for the celebrity couple, with Beckham admitting his marriage to Victoria -- like all marriages -- is "hard work", in an exclusive Australian interview with Lisa Wilkinson on The Sunday Project.
The interview comes on the eve of his first visit to Australia in seven years -- for the Invictus Games, where he's an ambassador, and will be joined by wife Victoria.
"I think marriage is always about hard work," Beckham said.
"Our children, they want your time and they deserve your time," David Beckham said.
"You make difficult situations like travelling away, being away from each other, you know you make it work."
Rumours of a marriage breakdown between the couple have been rife in recent months, but Beckham said he doesn't pay much attention to the tabloids.
"I've learnt to ignore some of the negative stuff that's said," he told Wilkinson.
"I think if you know each other, if you know you've got great friends, a great family behind you -- the thing that we have to do is protect our children."
