Hacker Behind JLaw's Nude Photo Leak Sentenced To Eight Months Prison
He's one of four men arrested in the 2014 'CelebGate' hacking scandal.
The hacker who released nude photos of Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton and a number of other celebrities has been sentenced to serve eight months behind bars as well as three years of supervised release.
George Garofano was one of four men arrested in the 2014 hacking scandal that led to private photos of Jennifer Lawrence, Kim Kardashian, Kate Upton, Kirsten Dunst, Vanessa Hudgens, Rihanna, Kate Bosworth and Hayden Panettiere being leaked online.
The 26-year-old pleaded guilty in April, confessing that he posed as a member of Apple’s online security in order to gain access to over 200 private iCloud accounts usernames and passwords.
Garofano reportedly begged for leniency, saying he had learned from his mistakes and accepted what he did was “legally and morally wrong”.
"It will take me a while to forgive myself for this, and I am disappointed in myself for anyone that I hurt, the victims, my family, and my friends,” he said, adding, “I feel remorse for anyone that could have been affected by this on any scale, public or private. It is a part of my life that I will always regret, as it has never been a reflection of who I am as an individual.”
Garofano’s attorney added, “Of course, he was old enough to know better even back then, that the conduct he was engaging in was wrong. But he now stands before the Court having matured, accepting responsibility or his actions and not having been in trouble with the law since.”
At the time of the leaks, Jennifer Lawrence came out swinging against the perpetrator, saying, “It is not a scandal. It is a sex crime,” she told Vanity Fair in 2014. “It is a sexual violation. It’s disgusting."
Garofano's conspirator, Ryan Collins, was sentenced to 18 months in jail back in 2016, while Edward Majerczyk, who was accused of coordinating the phishing plot targeting celebrities, was sentenced to nine months in prison in 2017.
Emilio Herrera, the fourth suspect involved, has pleaded guilty and is scheduled to be sentenced next month.
