Paris And Nicole Making Up Was The Best Thing That Happened In 2006
Over the past few weeks, we've been diving into very important matters of the naughties and this week, we're headed back to 2006.
Now, 2006 is often a slept-on year in pop culture, simply because it's so easily overshadowed by 2007, which was a wild year from start to finish. Still, '06 served some great drama in that it delivered us the end of Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie's feud.
It also held the only tangible proof that Nicole Richie had been planning to launch a music career -- something they spoke about a lot during the first two seasons of The Simple Life -- before Paris beat her to the punch with the globally beloved "Stars Are Blind".
Anyway, if you feel like getting sidetracked for a minute, here's Nicole's demo for "Dandelion", which is to my knowledge the only Nicole Richie song around.
Okay, great. Let's move on.
So, the reason for their feud has never actually been confirmed by either party. In 2005, Paris confirmed that they were no longer friends, saying: "It's no big secret that Nicole and I are no longer friends. Nicole knows what she did, and that's all I'm ever going to say about it."
Later that year, Nicole basically said that they'd drifted apart and that it was no biggie, despite persistent rumours that the feuding BFFs had stopped being friends after Nicole screened Paris' sex tape for all their friends. Nicole denied this to Vanity Fair, saying: "A, I don't watch porn, and B, I don't want to see someone I've known forever having sex. I mean, that's gross!"
Anyway, that's all so 2005, and we're here to talk about 2006!
After filming all but two scenes of The Simple Life season four separately, the pair were caught chatting on the phone by paparazzi, sparking rumours that the childhood friends had made up:
Two weeks after that -- in a publicity stunt that delivered me LIFE at the time -- the gals grabbed dinner together, leaving a long period of time for the paparazzi to get photos of the reunited friends as they waited for their valet.
The photos caused such a stir at the time that Paris' publicist released a statement, saying: "They had a meal last night. It's not my place to say what was discussed or the nature of the meal. But it's a good thing when people have a meal together."
Still, he played coy when asked if they were BFFs once more, saying: "I wouldn't characterise it that way because I don't know if it was a business or personal discussion. Let's just watch it unfold."
And watch it unfold we did! The next day, the pair hung out again:
And they were spotted together throughout the rest of 2006.
They attended a premiere together:
Attended events together:
Went to the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show together:
And tore up the dance floor at the Playstation 3 launch party together:
They later went on to film the final season of The Simple Life together, giving us all the happy ending we deserved.
As for whether the iconic childhood friends are still pals, Nicole told Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live last year that they don't talk very often, but they're on good terms and she still considers her a friend.
"Paris is somebody that's been in my life since day one," Nicole explained. "An idea of a true friend is somebody that's going to be there with you through and through. I haven't spoken to her in a while, but we are very good friends. I love her and I love her family. I have a lot of respect for her.”
