Celebrities Defend James Gunn After Disney Fire Director For Inappropriate Tweets

"If people are punished despite changing, then what does that teach people about owning mistakes and evolving?"

Over the weekend Disney made the decision to fire James Gunn as the director of the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after offensive jokes Gunn had tweeted in the past resurfaced.

Disney released a statement regarding Gunn's tweets, which joked about things like rape and pedophilia, saying "The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James' Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio's values".

Since his firing, a handful of celebrities have come out in Gunn's defence including Guardians star Dave Bautista who tweeted ,"I'm NOT ok with what's happening to him".

Bautista warned that Gunn was targeted by what he called a "cyber nazi attack".

Actress Selma Blair also tweeted in support of Gunn, as well as circulating an online petition to reinstate the 51-year-old as the Vol. 3  director.

Others have also spoken out in support of the director including Ant-Man star David Dastmalchian.

Gunn's brother Sean -- who starred in the Guardians films -- also posted a thread of tweets where he talked about his brother's evolution and "softening his edge".

Some fans were outraged at Disney's swift firing of Gunn versus the ongoing support of controversial figure Johnny Depp who made a surprise appearance at San Diego Comic Con.
