Snooki Opens Up About Being Adopted
“I always wonder if I never was adopted and I stayed with my birth parents would I still be a hot mess like this? Just in Spanish, probably. I feel like I was always meant to be this hot mess.”
Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi has opened up about her experience being adopted in a new video posted to her YouTube channel.
Finding fame for being a 'guidette' on Jersey Shore, the reality star talks about the duality of her identity as an adopted child.
“Even though my nationality is Chilean, I grew up Italian. So when people say to me what’s your nationality I say, ‘I’m Chilean but I grew up Italian.’ I feel like I’m both,” she shared.
Adopted at six months from Santiago, Chile, Snooki shared that her parents, Helen and Andrew Polizzi, "flew all the way to Chile to come pick [her] up".
She continued: "They said right when they saw me... I was like, ‘Mama, Dada.’ So it was meant to be, things just work out that way — it’s called fate”.
Sharing that she believes she was "always meant to be" adopted by her parents, Snooki caught herself on the term "adopted parents".
“Ew, I hate saying adoptive parents because they are my parents, it’s weird,” she shared, noting that she doesn't often speak about her adoption story because she feels like 'her family is her family'.
She went on to say that for a long time, she wasn't particularly interested in learning about her birth family.
“I never really thought, ‘What’s my birth mother like? What’s my birth family like?’ Because I’m so content with my adopted parents and my adopted life and family," she said.
As she got older, however, she found herself more curious.
"I thought about it once I started getting older, like, ‘What does my mom look like? What does my dad look like?’” Snooki shared.
Although her adoption wasn't a secret that her parents had to explain to her as she got older, and was something that Snooki herself was "totally fine" with, the reality star and mum of two shared that she would often find it difficult to raise the questions she did have about her birth family.
“Every time I [asked] my parents they would get upset," she said. "I could just tell they would get upset because they didn’t want to tell me the truth or they didn’t want me to think that they’re not my parents which was never the case. Eventually, when I was 21, 22, I got my dad drunk and was like, ‘Dad, can you just tell me what went on? Why was I up for adoption?’ ”
Finally, Nicole got the answers she was looking for from her father, as he explained that her birth parents had other children to look after and couldn't afford to keep her also, a choice Nicole sees as an act of love.
"I can’t even imagine because I have two kids, putting up a child for adoption, to give them a better life,” she mused. “That’s so amazing for them, that shows how much they loved me. But also I could never do that. I can’t even imagine how they felt giving me up but thank you for that.”
Snooki says that if her birth family were to reach out now, she would be interested in meeting them.
“Would I ever want to meet them? I think I would, I would definitely want to meet my birth family,” Snooki said.
Saying that she's "always" been curious about them, she quipped: “I always wonder if I never was adopted and I stayed with my birth parents would I still be a hot mess like this? Just in Spanish, probably. I feel like I was always meant to be this hot mess.”
