Dust Off Your Disco Balls, ABBA Is Releasing New Music
Mamma Mia... here we go again!
Can you hear the drums Fernando? Well you should because for the first time in over 30 years ABBA are back in the recording studio.
The iconic Swedish foursome announced via Instagram that they had come back together to record two new songs, one of which will be performed by what they're calling "ABBA avatars" or what we're calling ABBAtars, obviously.
"The decision to go ahead with the exciting ABBA avatar tour project had an unexpected consequence," the statement read. "We four felt that, after some 35 years, it could be fun to join forces again and go into the recording studio."
"It resulted in two new songs and one of them 'I Still Have Faith In You' will be performed by our digital selves in a TV special."
Agnetha, Benny, Björn and Anni-Frid topped the charts time and time again with their pop hits, as well as winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974. The band broke up in 1982 and, despite coming together in 2016 to perform at a private party, the band said they'd never tour again. Until the ABBA avatar tour project!
You may be thinking, "Wait, what the hell is the 'ABBA avatar tour project," and honestly you wouldn't be alone.
Back in 2016 the legendary disco band paired up with American Idol creator Simon Fuller to create what they described as "a groundbreaking venture that will utilise the very latest in digital and virtual-reality technology".
Björn Ulvaeus told The Guardian the ABBAtars would be de-aged so they'd look more like they did back in 1979, which is a technology we desperately want to have on-hand after a night of too many red wines.
That also means that, unfortunately if you were keen to see the gang reunite in the flesh you'll be disappointed to hear their holograms will be doing the heavy lifting in a two-hour TV special set to air in December of this year.
Still, this makes 2018 a huge year for ABBA fans considering the highly anticipated sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again will be hitting cinemas in July, releasing 10 years after the original.
Amanda Seyfried, Meryl Streep, Christine Baranski, Julie Waters, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth are all returning for the sequel and this time they're being joined by CHER. And no, no holograms here.
While ABBA's plan is to release "I Still Have Faith In You" for the upcoming TV special, there has been no word on the second single just yet.
Still, it's amazing to see one of the most recognisable bands in history coming back together more than three decades later.
As the statement read, "We may have come of age, but the song is new. And it feels good".
