Firefighters in Germany rescued a chubby rat after it got stuck in sewer manhole and couldn't get out.

A group of eight volunteer firefighters were dispatched to conduct the rescue after receiving an 'animal rescue, small animal' code.

When firefighters arrived, animal rescuer Micheal Sehr was already on the scene but had had no luck freeing the rat from the manhole cover.

"She had a lot of winter flab and was stuck at her hip -- there was no going forward or back," Sehr told local media.

A full rescue effort ensued, where firefighters lifted the manhole from the ground and propped it up with plastic wedges.

With some careful maneuvering and slow, sustained pulling, the rat was popped free and released straight back into the sewer.

When asked by media why such a large entourage of rescue members was required for the operation, Sehr said all animals should be treated as important.

"Even animals that are hated by many deserve respect," he said.
