The Second World War veteran and author was an outspoken advocate for the poor until the end.

In his later years, Harry Leslie Smith became a prolific Twitter user, lending his support to Britain's National Health Service and the preservation of social democracy.

Last week, his family announced that he had become gravely ill before a trip to the UK and had been using his Twitter account to keep the world updated on his condition.
