Football fan first, Royal Family Member second.

That's basically a description of who Prince William was overnight, as he celebrated the promotion of Aston Villa to the English Premier League.

Wills is a big Villa fan. But it's been tough time for the Birmingham-based club in recent years, after they were relegated from the EPL in 2016.

For three seasons, Villa languished in "The Championship" -- English football's second tier competition. This was him in the difficult times last year.

But Villa could win their way back to the EPL if they won against Derby County in a one-off playoff early Tuesday morning (AEST).

The result? Well it was tense for a while there...

But we've written this story, so you already know it. Yep, it was 2-1 to the "Villains".

Wills, watching with his mate and former Aston Villa striker John Carew, gave a royal fist pump.

And then like any footy fan, it was all about cheering and hugging and generally carrying on like a pork chop.

His Royal Footyness wasn't the only one.

For the record, Prince William follows Villa because most of his mates at school were Manchester United or Chelsea fans. As he told English football legend Gary Lineker a few years ago, he wanted to follow a team who could give him "more emotional rollercoaster moments".

This attitude is dangerously close to hipsterdom, but we'll say no more in case we get into trouble with the Queen.
