A man and his guide dog have both died after being struck by a car in rural Victoria.

The pair were believed to have been walking south-east along the Calder Highway at Wedderburn at around 6:40am on Sunday when they were struck by a car travelling in the same direction.

The man, 63, and his dog both died at the scene.

The driver of a Hyundai sedan, a man in his 20s, stopped and rendered assistance but sadly the pair could not be saved.

The driver was later taken to hospital to be treated for shock.

It comes hours after another male pedestrian in his 60s was hit and killed by a car in Melbourne's south-east in what has been a tragic weekend on Victorian roads.

Victoria Police said Sunday's incident in Wedderburn marked the 139th life lost on state roads this year alone.
