Person Shot After Incident In Sydney Hospital
Nepean Hospital in Sydney's west went into lockdown after a person was shot in the emergency department.
UPDATE: A critical incident investigation has been launched by NSW Police following the incident.
The 54-year-old man was shot after allegedly threatening security officers with two knives.
He was shot by responding police, and remains in a stable condition after being treated at the hospital.
Emergency crews rushed to Nepean Hospital, in Sydney's Penrith area, at 4pm on Thursday after reports of shots fired.
The hospital's emergency department has been closed and the hospital is in lockdown, with an exclusion zone set up around the building.
A NSW ambulance spokesperson confirmed a person was being treated for a gunshot wound to the abdomen, but could not comment on the person's condition. They said a "number of crews" were responding to the hospital.
Police confirmed to Ten Eyewitness News the man lunged at police with a knife after threatening self harm.
It is believed the man was not a patient, but had driven his car to the emergency department, before making a reference to a bomb being inside the car.
The Bomb Squad was called in and the area put into lockdown.
Staff barricaded themselves into a staffroom, where they remained for a number of hours.
In a statement to ten daily, the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District said the hospital's emergency department was closed.
"Nepean Hospital emergency department has been temporarily closed following a shooting. Ambulances are being diverted to other hospitals and ED patients are asked to attend other hospitals," the statement said.
Patients were being diverted to hospitals at Blacktown, Liverpool, Hawkesbury.
"Patients, staff and visitor safety is our top priority," the hospital said.
