A 15-year-old boy and girl have been arrested following a late-night pursuit that spanned more than 40 kilometres across Adelaide in a stolen car.

Police first spotted the pair driving an allegedly stolen Mazda on Marion Road at Netley, in Adelaide's inner south, just before 6 am on Monday.

The lengthy pursuit began when they attempted to stop the SUV, but officers lost sight of it through side streets before it was seen again on the Anzac Highway heading towards the CBD.

Police say the 15-year-old girl behind the wheel continued to evade police and drove onto the South Eastern Freeway, into the Adelaide Hills.

Road spikes were used to puncture the car's tyres just after the Stirling exit, but it proved no deterrent for the pair, who continued to drive east at slow speed, past the towns of Bridgewater and Hahndorf.

The car continued for some time on its rims, with three tyres shredded.

With three tyres shredded, the teen driver and her passenger could only reach speeds of 15-25 kilometres per hour, but they carried on past Mount Barker.

Eventually, the vehicle was surrounded by police cars from the front and behind and had no choice but to stop.

The 15-year-old female driver and male passenger were both arrested without incident, and have been charged with illegal use of a motor vehicle.

A 15-year-old girl is facing multiple driving charges.

The girl will also face several other charges including engaging in a police pursuit and driving unlicensed.

Both will appear in the Adelaide Youth Court on Tuesday.
